How to choose a GPS tracker for your car or fleet

Wired or wire-free, basic or advanced. The questions to ask before you buy a tracker.

Not every tracker suits every vehicle. The right choice depends on what you want to see, what you want to control, and what happens if the vehicle is stolen.

Start with what you need to know

Ask yourself what you will actually use the tracker for:

  • Peace of mind for one car: live location, trip history and movement alerts.
  • Theft protection: remote engine cut-off, a PIN ignition lock and a hidden backup unit.
  • Running a fleet: reports on mileage, stops, speeding and working hours, plus several users on one account.
  • Controlling costs: a fuel sensor linked to the tracker.

Wired or wire-free?

A wired tracker connects to the vehicle's power, so it can report often and can cut the engine. A wire-free tracker runs on its own battery for a long time and can be hidden almost anywhere, which makes it ideal as a backup for vehicle recovery, or for trailers and equipment with no power.

Many owners fit both: a wired tracker for daily use and a hidden wire-free unit in case the first is found.

Check the app

You will use the app every day, so make sure it shows live location clearly, lets you replay trips, and sends alerts you can act on. Ask whether you can add other users, such as a driver or a family member.

Ask about coverage

Trackers report over the mobile network. Dual-SIM units keep reporting across more areas. A good platform also shows you when a unit has stopped reporting, so you are never left guessing.

Get it fitted properly

Where and how a tracker is fitted matters as much as the tracker itself. A discreet, tidy installation is harder for a thief to find and less likely to cause electrical problems.
